• Nearly 4.3 crore readers are there for all Indic language wikipedias! This number is huge and increased by nearly 1/3 in just 1 month! So Indic wikis has huge existing reader base.

Summary and perspectives from Discussions with Indic language wikimedians - 2011

Dear All,

I have sent a detailed note to the various local language and India community mailing lists summarizing my discussions with various Indic editors. In this note, I have also shared my perspectives on a series of issues related to community building (keeping existing editors, welcoming back old editors, attracting newbies, improving outreach, encouraging communication, collaborating on articles, and celebrating success), project quality (discouraging the use of bots for content creation and being more selective in adoption of English wikipedia policies) as well as on readership. It is a long post but I request you to go through this page in meta wiki. Please share your comments and feedback as a reply below this, or on the meta talk page of my post, or directly to me. Building Asaamese wikipedia and Assamese Wiki community

Dear Assamese wikipedians,

When started working on this note I was thinking about the state of Assamese Wikipedia few months before! The current members of the Assamese wiki community has rewrtten history of Assamese wikipedia in the span of past few months. You are building a language wikipedia and community brick by brick. I would like to congragulate you for all the good work you are doing. This note is for providing some suggestions of taking the Assamese wiki projects and cmmunity forward. I am sharing few ideas for that.

Over the past few weeks we have discussed the current state and the future of Indic wiki projects - and quite a few of you have helped me get a richer understanding of Assamese community and projects. And I have provided the summary of discussions and my ideas about taking Indic wiki projects forward here. During our discussion many of you have asked for clear ideas to improve the strength of the community and quality of projects. I have been thinking about what would be most appropriate for Assamese community and I want to share some specific suggestions for Assamese wikipedia. I am recommending these based on ideas from Assamese editors as well as learnings from other Indic communities which have relevance for Assamese.

As of now we have around 10 active wikipedians and close to 950 articles in Assamese wikipedia. I know soon we will cross 1000 articles milestone. I hope we can use that as an oppurtunity to reach maximum possible Assamese speakers to create awareness about Assamese wikipedia. We can plan some programs for that.

I think the single most powerful way of achieving the huge potential for Assamese wiki projects is to build the community and thereby increase the number of articles. Increase communication and collaboration between editors is one way of doing this since that will retain existing editors and attract more users to Assamese wiki. Assamese community may consider working on more frequent interaction (online and face-to-face), increasing the spirit of common purpose and bonding amongst editors and last, but not least, attracting newbies.

Below are some points that I request Assamese wiki community to consider.

Wiki meetups

Physical meetings between wikipedians is a really strong way to help the growth of Indic wikipedias. For Indic wikipedias (For example, Assamese) some of us need to be in the field among speakers of our language (Assamese) to build the community, unlike English wikipedia where community growth and community building happened naturally. The time and effort put by Malayalam and Tamil communities for offline activitis to build communuty is providing all good results now. We can learn few lessons from their efforts and try yo replicate in Assamese also.

Till now Assamese wikipedians never had a wiki meetup. As some of you might know meetups connect us with like-minded people, build friendships, help share ideas and plan initiatives. For small communities, there is always the feeling that we are all alone - and meetups help to correct this perception and this is a source of inspiration. Please plan more meetups. Physical meetings between wikipedians is very much required to grow a healthy wiki community in any indic langauge wikipedia. I will help in every possible way to support all the initiatives regarding this.

Wiki workshops

Wiki workshop is the best way to attract more users to wikipedia. We should start doing more workshops to attract more users to wiki editing. I thought of doing a wiki workshop for Assamese in Delhi When Gitaratha was here. But that didn't worked. In Delhi, we have the required space and infrastructure so please feel free to use it whenever Assamese wikipedians require it. For other locations if any one is interested to conduct wiki workshops please let us all know and we will work out some way of supporting this. More important is, community members need to come forward to conduct few wiki workshops. I am happy to support you in all the possible ways.

WikiProjects

As most of you know WikiProjects are informal groups of wiki editors who work work together as a team to improve Wikipedia. These groups often focus on a specific topic area (for example, articles related to Assamese language or a interest area like regional politics or Assamese literature or global topics like medicine, science or a specific kind of task (for example, expanding stub articles). It allows editors to work with other editors - all of whom share a passion for the subject or task. It has worked really well in many languages across India. (For example, Malayalam wikipeida has a project on "Theyyam" an art form of Kerala, “Astronomy" project, "Stub elimination" project, Categorization project, and so on. Group of 3 or 4 Malayalam wiki community members interested in these projects are actively collabrating on these articles to enhance it.). The idea I want to emphasis is, along with working on articles on our interest it will be nice if we could start collabrating with other community members. That will enhance our wiki editing experince and is good for the growth of community. That will help existing users to continue in wiki for a long time and bring more new users to wiki.

Some suggestions for wiki projects are:

• Start a wiki project to create/expand all articles related to Assamese language
• Start a wiki project to create/expand articles about districts/villages of Assam and other states of India.
• Start a wiki project to expand the stubs
• Start a wiki project to identify and remove potential copyright violated images and move the rest of the free images to commons
• Start a project on an area which 2-3 editors feel passionate about - whatever the subject might be.

In fact if we could get to know the interest of users we could easily design various small wiki projects as is happening in English wikipedia. The point I want to emphasis is that collaboration between editors will ensure a healthy community so that we can do more programs. The best way of collaboration is doing what we all love best - editing. So let us collaborate on what we love doing most. Rememeber along with building community we need to make sure all the important topics relavnt to Assamese people are added to Assamese wikipedia soon. That will attract more Assamese speakers to wiki. As you might have noticed for all Indic wikipedias readership is growing. So it is important that we add more articles to wiki and that can be used to build an even bigger community.

Outreach

To encourage users to start editing in wiki some of us need to take initiative for some outreach activities.

Online Outreach: Social Networking

I do not need to tell Assamese wiki community about this. Community is already using FB to its fullest. While FB can and should me used for attracting users to wiki, wiki activities should not be happening in FB (especillay discussions about particular articles and discussions on wiki policies). Use social networking sites to reach out to people (Facebook, Twitter, and many others.) You can publicise the news about wiki meetups, wiki workshops through these sites or you can invite people to join the community or you can announce major achievements (like the commencing of wiki projects, Assamese wiki crossing the 1,000 article milestone, and so on). Use social net wroking sites to attract Assamese speakers to Assamese wikipedia.

Online Outreach: Assamese Blogs

Use Assamese blogs to reach out to the Assamse online community. They are the people whom you can easily be converted to Wikipedians since they know Assamse typing and have an interest towards Assamese computing. You need just tell them about the importance of Wikipedia. It would be very useful to get in touch with popular bloggers and ask them to inform their readers about Assamese Wikipedia and other wiki projects, encourage more people to consider editing, and point interested people to Assamese wiki community.

Assamese Newspapers & TV Channels'

Assamese newspapers and TV channels have mass outreach among Assamese people. Can we establish contacts with journalists and ask for their support in covering Assamese Wikipedia. Journalists always look for news items that are directly relevant to their audience and something like Assamese Wikipedia crossing 1000 articles is a perfect story. Any further achievement of Assamese community like when you cross the 50 active editor mark, and the 100 editor mark, when you do an offline release etc. - will all get you good media coverage. This will help in building the community, increasing motivation of existing editors, and attract new editors.

Can I request as many Assamese wikipedians to share you thoughts about these ideas. Do you think they are the right ideas for Assamese? If so and if not, why? Would you suggest any alternate ideas? If you like these ideas, which ones would you like to work on? Is there any help you need? Would you be interested in getting connected to other community members who might also be interested? Please share your ideas.

The reason I am asking everyone to participate is it will help us all as a community to identify people who have similar interests and to start interacting and working closely on these interests. The ideal outcome of this post is for the community to start planning some of these activities as a group. There are two ways of doing this. I think, these are some brilliant ideas to keep our wiki rich. Among these ideas some of the interested Social Netwrokers & Bloggers are already in wiki. Presently Assamese Wiki has only a few workers, but they are doing a great job as much as they can although some controversy is going on among the members, but we have many other bigger things to do. We need more man power and the FB community is doing a great job regarding this. But that is not enough for us and we need to spread the news outside of FB and Internet and for that I wanted a workshop in a bigger stage at Guwahati University which could also be like a press meet to the Assamese television and print media through which we can attract more people. I believe that the workshop will attract a huge amount of student from the university. After that with the help of the student power we can reach more and more students from other universities and colleges of Assam and after that we will go to the schools. But I think we have to create some rules and protocols in Assamese Wikipedia before going to like such big stage about translating, editing, writing etc. to reduce the controversies. Jyoti Prakash, even before taking such a bold move, we, the few workers, must establish unbreakable ties of faith, love and respect. That must start from two things: learning the meanings of wikipedia rules and knowing each other. We are talking about lakhs of Assamese people, who are eager to work for wikipedia, more so when it reaches a glorious level. Then, it will be the tasks of us existing members to tell them what wikipedia is, what it is not and how hard it is to work in public domain. So, first, as Shiju outlined, lets learn about Wikipedia, thoroughly, more than future people who will come. Presently Assamese has a small community. The need of the hour is to build the community and thereby slowly increase the number of articles. So it is the time for us to use all available platforms to reachout to people. While FB is good and can be used for reaching out to people, the discussion reagrding ploivies of wiki and articles of wiki should be happening on the talk pages of wiki, and not in FB posts. The policies of AS wiki should be discussed and enhanced in AS wiki, not in FB. Rememeber all the important things reagdring AS wiki need to be documented and preserved in AS wiki. Infact knowlgly or unknowingly you are becoming part of history of Assamese comuputing (along wth creating Assamese free content). So make sure Wiki related things are discussed in the talk pages of Wiki itself. Then only collabration between community members will increase in wiki.

While we can plan Wikiworkshops and that type of programs soon, it is important that inside wiki we create a good working environment for all the new users coming in. Remember Assamese speakers who are attracted to wiki will stay with wiki only if it has good editing envionment. To create good editing environment, collabration between editors must increase. Infact all the joy of wiki editing lies with the basic fact of collabrative autoring (and various collabrative programs). We need to start doing more of that. Also it is very evry important that wiki should have a decentralized system. No admins or any super users should not be controlling wiki. A complete decentralized system should be in place so that every user (even new user) can contribute freely. From my part I will extend all the support rquired by giving various suggestions (from my past editing experince) for various wiki projects. Soon I wiill try to suggest a wikiproject for Assamese wikipedia. Please keep the current enthusiam going. Soon AS wiki will reach 1000 articles. The best we could do is to let new editors know that what they write will be edited by others. Probably it is unrealistic to expect new editors to understand this aspect (collaborative editing) of the wikipedia experience on their own. The workshop/meetup should emphasize this very well. The next thing we should do is think up ways how we can resolve conflicts. The en-wikipedia has rules and protocols, but we might have to adapt because we are a much smaller and a fledging community. Let us brainstorm on conflict resolution then. This workshop/meetup should also discuss conflict resolution in detail. So some of the senior editors will have to take this responsibility to keep an eye on potential conflicts and help guide a conflict toward a resolution. চাইপাও 08:47, 31 ডিচেম্বৰ 2011 (UTC)

I agree that we have been rather lax as far as references are concerned. People have used dubious sources, blogs, transient websites etc, when they have used references at all. my initial thoughts were that we should let people get comfortable writing and savoring the nice feeling of collaborative editing, before putting more and more restrictions. but now i think it is appropriate to introduce more of these rules, policies and protocols.
