This table describes all parameters which can be used in building infoboxes. Only the name parameter must be assigned a value.

Field name Description
name Required. The official name of the protected area. It will be displayed at the top of the infobox. In most cases this should be the same as the article name less any disambiguation. For example if the article title is Mount Washington (New Hampshire) then name=Mount Washington.
alt_name If there is a common English name for the area use for the name parameter. This parameter can be used to display the name in the local language or for an alternate English name if it is commonly used. If you would like to italicize the text use wiki markup.
iucn_category Strongly recommended. The IUCN category associated with the protected area. Valid values are Ia, Ib, II, III, IV, V, or VI. See IUCN Categories.
photo The name of an image file to be displayed. No special formatting is needed.
photo_width Can be used to change the display width the image. The default and maximum value is 283px. Images with a horizontal orientation (landscape mode) will generally display well at the default setting. An image with vertical orientation (portrait mode) may need to be adjusted to 180px or 220px. For example photo_width=200 and not photo_width=200px.
photo_alt Alt text for the photo, for visually impaired readers. See WP:ALT.
photo_caption The caption that will appear below the image if one is required.
map The name of the map to be displayed. See Map display methods.
map_width Can change the display width of the map. The default and maximum width is 283px, but usually the map should be much smaller. For example map_width=200 and not map_width=200px.
map_alt Alt text for the map. See WP:ALT.
map_caption The caption that appears below the map if one is required.
relief Selects a relief map when assigned any value. . This is not functional when using the XY method for map display. See Map display methods.
x
y
Specifies the position of the location marker on some types of maps when the XY method for map display is used. The coordinates of the marker in pixels based on a map width of 1000 pixels. The template will scale these values for proper display. See below.
label A text message that will be displayed next to the marker. Works with label_position below.
label_position Specifies the position of a label with respect to the marker. This is not functional when using the XY method for map display. It must be assigned a value or the label will not display. Valid values are left, right, top and bottom. See label above.
mark The image to use for the marker. Default = Red pog.svg, unless map=us locator blank.svg in which case the default = Green pog.svg. See Template:Infobox_map#Marks for more information.
marker_size The display width of the marker image in pixels. Default = 8.
location The location of the protected area. Don't be too precise. County, state and country are good in the USA. If the area is within a city specify the city, state and country. If the area is in multiple counties just list the state and country. For areas in other countries adjust accordingly.
nearest_city Recommended if the area is not within a city. It could be a city with a major airport or a large gateway town where supplies and lodging are available.
coords For the {{Coord}} template. Will not generate a location marker if a map is used. See below. When this option is used the type, region, scale, source, format and display parameters are not functional but this data can be entered in the Coord template. The defaults should be type:landmark and display:inline, title.
lat_d The degrees of latitude. This value can be specified as a decimal degree and when this format is used minutes and seconds should not be specified.
lat_m The minutes of latitude.
lat_s The seconds of latitude.
lat_NS N if north of the equator, S if south of the equator. Other values will be disregarded.
long_d The degrees of longitude. This value can be specified as a decimal degree and when this format is used minutes and seconds should not be specified.
long_m The minutes of longitude.
long_s The seconds of longitude.
long_EW E if East of the prime meridian, W if west of the prime meridian. Other values will be disregarded.
coords_ref Can be used with either coordinate display method above. Strongly recommended. Specify a citation for the coordinates using <ref>...</ref> tags.
type Type is one way to specify the scale of maps generated by external map websites. See type for valid values. The default value is landmark. If no type is appropriate consider using the scale parameter below.
scale Determines the zoom factor for external map websites. See scale. The value is 1:10,000 for the default type which is landmark. Using scale=50000 will change the zoom to 1:50,000.
region A country code. See ISO 3166-2:US, ISO 3166-2 and ISO 3166-1 alpha-2. For example US-OR is the code for Oregon. This computer readable code is recommended. It will not be displayed. See region.
source Source of the coordinate data. See source. For example GNIS or NGS, etc. It will not be displayed. Not all possible values are recognized.
format Determines the format of the coordinates displayed. Valid values are dms for degrees, minutes and seconds, and dec for decimal degrees. The default value is dms.
display Determines where the coordinates will be displayed. Valid values are inline and inline, title and their variants. The default is inline, title and is recommended.
area Area of the protected area. Usually in acres or square miles for US locations and hectares or square kilometres elsewhere. The {{Convert}} template should be used. Very small areas might be specified in square feet, square yards or square metres.
authorized
created
established
designated
The date the protected area was created. See below. Use {{Start date}}. For example, for Yosemite National Park, use {{Start date|1890|10|1}}.
visitation_num The number of visitors in a recent year if known.
visitation_year The year during which the number of visitors was counted.
visitation_ref Used with the visitation parameters above. Highly recommended. Specify the a citation for the visitation data using <ref>...</ref> tags.
governing_body
administrator
owner
The agency or organization which controls or owns the protected area. See below.
world_heritage_site The year the protected area was designated a World Heritage Site. Few areas have this designation. If the article uses {{Infobox World Heritage Site}} then this parameter should not be used.
url The full URL of the official website with no formatting. For example: http://www.example.org/.

Depending on the value of the iucn_category parameter, one of the following banners will be displayed below the name. Valid values are Ia, Ib, II, III, IV, V and VI. For more information read the World Commission on Protected Areas article,

A few cells allow alternate parameter names which can be used to generate an appropriate label. Editors should probably not be overly concerned with using the correct label unless using the wrong label would be a blatant error.

Protected areas are often created as the result of a governmental procedure. For example, in the United States, national parks are established by an act of congress, National Monuments are usually created by presidential proclamation, and wilderness areas are designated by an act of congress. National Park Service Affiliated Areas are authorized.

authorized → Authorized
created → Created
designated → Designated
established → Established

Some areas are privately owned, and it might be inappropriate to use the label Governing body. For example, the Aleutian World War II National Historic Area is affiliated with the National Park Service but is owned by the Ounalashka Corporation.

governing_body → Governing body
administrator → Administrator
owner → Owner

Any image of a map showing the location of the protected area can be used. There are two methods by which maps using a marker can be displayed.

Display a marker on a map using a template and geographic coordinates

সম্পাদনা কৰক

A marker can be superimposed on one of a set of special map templates. If a valid map name is specified this is the method the template will attempt to use. To display a marker the geographic coordinates must be specified using the parameters lat_d, long_d, etc. The marker will not be displayed if the {{coord}} template is used. See the documentation for {{Location map}}. The parameters for this template map to a subset of the parameters for Location map. A map template can be found using these sources:

List of templates - Many of the listed items are redirects and a few templates may not function as expected.
Category:Location map templates - templates sorted by category.
Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Location map/Info - a search that might help.
Special:Prefixindex/Template:Location map - another search that might help.

All of the names begin with the words "Location map" followed by the area covered. The value you need to specify is the area name. The map template for the for Alberta, Canada is Location map Canada Alberta. In this case specify map=Canada Alberta. For example:

Many of the maps for large areas in this set of templates use equirectangular projection. Large scale maps, using this projection, look different than those with which most are familiar. However, there are some large area maps that that use a familiar map projection. A list of large area maps that do not use equirectangular projection can be found here.

Display a marker on any map image

সম্পাদনা কৰক

To display a marker on any map use the x and y parameters.

The values for the x and y parameters are the pixel coordinates of the location mark when the image is scaled to a width of 1000 pixels.

x is the pixel offset for the mark from the left edge of an image 1000px wide.
y is the pixel offset for the mark from the top edge of an image 1000px wide.

There are at least two ways of obtaining these values:

  1. Download the image from the image's file page to your computer. Open the image in a graphics editor, such as GIMP or XnView. Scale (resize) the image to a width of 1000px and then note the x, y coordinates when the mouse cursor points to to the desired location. Use these values directly.
  2. Download the image from the image's file page to your computer. Open the image in any image viewer that displays the coordinates of the cursor position, such as Paint from Microsoft. Note the X, Y coordinates when the mouse cursor points to the location. Then:
1000 · x'/w = x  and  1000 · y'/w = y
where x' and y' are the mouse cursor coordinates, w is the width of the image displayed on your computer and x and y are the values to assign to the x and y parameters.

These computed coordinates are relative and will work even if the width of the image displayed in an article is changed by another user. Using simple pixel coordinate values would not have this advantage. Note that Wikipedia does not allow the aspect ratio of an image to be altered.

In the example below the marker is 7.8% of the way across the map from the left side and 29% of the way down from the top.
