Actually no! Google Translate using Bengali script for Manipuri language (AKA. Meitei language) is currently becoming a burning issue in social media.

@Haoreima: Yes, you're right. They shouldn't have done it and should promote the use of Meitei script. I think they are not using any user contribution for training their models, be it for Manipuri or any other language. At least, they need to respect wikipedia. Manipuri wikipedia has thousands of articles, all written in Meitei script and not a single in Bengali script. They need to remember that! If they approved bn script for mni language, then what will be the usage of GT in wikipedia, wiktionary, wikidata, Commons (regarding mni language) & all? Lol, right! @Haoreima: Yes, I understand. But, being involved in Machine translation-related works, I have seen that most open datasets contain Bengali script. For example, PM India website (https://www.pmindia.gov.in/mni/). If you go to that website and choose Manipuri, you'll see the use of Bengali script. So is the case with many other websites. Let me also tell you (or maybe you already know) that the PM India website serves as an open dataset for Indian languages and is used in many MT projects. As Google translate and Wikipedia are different projects, so we can't say that Google will do it according to Wikipedia or not. Maybe they'll change it later in the final version or provide two options. Btw, let me tell you that I'm not promoting the use of Bengali script. @Haoreima: For many languages, that use multiple scripts, Translation services like Google translate and Bing translator may provide options to select the desired script. For example, Google translate is showing 3 scripts for Tamazight. It'll make no sense if they mix all three. Maybe there will be three variations available for that language. Same may happen with Manipuri. Google may not (most probably) have enough data to train a model using Meitei script. Maybe after validating all the beta translations using Bengali script, they'll convert it to Meitei. @Haoreima: Yeah, that's great that you're making people aware of it. Submitting words in Meitei script will definitely help them convert Bengali to Meitei. And yes, it'll be helpful to flag beta translations. Because, they use multiple layers while translating. @Haoreima: These are the probable steps. That means, To translate from English to Manipuri, instead of directly translating it, they'll translate it to Hindi first, then to other languages. Because Hindi is a bigger language and has more data. So, it's used for most Indian languages as an intermediate language. I am also working on an MT project, so I keep a close eye on these things and keep reading various research papers related to machine learning and machine translation. Moreover, with over 60K contributions, I am an active contributor to google translate for Assamese. The beta translations in Asm are very accurate and it seems like Asm will be released soon. @Haoreima: 1. Yes, definitely. It may take some time but is very close to being added. 2. You can add more articles (in detail) as Wikipedia data is also used in language processing. You'll also have to prepare parallel data for Manipuri. For that, you have to translate open-source projects like Wikipedia, Ubuntu, Tatoeba. Gnome, WordPress, Joomla, movies subtitles (OpenSubtitles, etc. That's how you can develop your language. But it's a bit of unsatisfactory thing that pmindia & vikaspedia are using bn script for mni lang, when mni script is engaged for university level education for mni lang. @Haoreima: There was a time when computers didn't support Meitei unicode block and there was also font issues, that's why use of Bengali script is still dominant on the internet. In context of Machine translation, Parallel data means Data in one language and its corresponding translation into another. Suppose there's a sentence in English, and it is translated into Manipuri, then it's a parallel translation. Hello Mohsin! I forgot to ask you something! How long have you been participating in Google Translate? From which month of a year? When Odia (Oriya) was approved, during that time, were Assamese and Manipuri available in Google Translate community translation? For me, I started working from January of this year. I think Assamese was available in the community from the very beginning (I guess from 2012). Also, I would like to tell you that, before the community translation existed, people could fill up a form and send them translations (now it's not available). At that time, other Google projects were also available for localization. So, Google search was translated into Assamese by the community. But, since that is not available now, translations are not updated. Now, the company get their projects translated by professional translators or translation agencies. Many of their apps and services (like YouTube, sheet, gmail, etc.) are now available in Assamese. Hello Mohsin! Is the Google Translate tool ok for translating Assamese & Meitei? Many Indians are saying that they couldn't translate anyone of the newly added languages as of now. Some say it's ok. And yeah, to change from Bengali script to Meitei script for Meitei language, I have requested/recruited a lot of friends to send massive feedback to Google Translate to use Meitei script! @Haoreima All new languages are available on desktop. I checked on my phone, it appeared once, they disappeared when I reloaded.

Bodo language has 12,500 contributions. Mizo language has 1,600 contributions. Bodo was in the beta version too. But Bodo was not included. I fell sorry for them. Btw, Mizo is lucky. And yes, Tibetan is unlucky. But I always thought that Assamese & Manipuri will not be skipped by Google Translate. And about the inability to access by some devices from some parts of the world, I asked a question to Google Translate team and they replied back to me. And regarding your other question, I think they have been working with Freelance translators and translation agencies for language translation and audio transcriptions from 2018 (I did some last year). Assamese had 5 lakh plus contribution. So, I was wondering if Assamese's voice facility is provided or not. Else, voice facility might be contributed in a different platform! Do you have any idea? And regarding translations, my mobile phone, desktop and laptop are able to translate the Meitei language websites into English and other previously supported languages! @Haoreima No voice recognition is not released yet. But, it shouldn't take time. Few years ago, they asked native speakers to record their voices on their phones and asked freelancers to transcribe the audio. Plus, they asked to transcribe YouTube videos. Thank you for supporting Wiki Conference India 2023. We are humbled by the number of applications we have received and hope to learn more about the work that you all have been doing to take the movement forward. In order to offer flexibility, we have recently extended our deadline for the Program and Scholarships submission- you can find all the details on our Meta Page.

COT is working hard to ensure we bring together a conference that is truly meaningful and impactful for our movement and one that brings us all together. With an intent to be inclusive and transparent in our process, we are committed to organizing community sessions at regular intervals for sharing updates and to offer an opportunity to the community for engagement and review.
