Proposal to enable an experimental open source machine translation system for Assamese

Content translation has been used already by many communities to translate more than half a million Wikipedia articles, and we want to help communities with potential to grow by using translation more. We propose to enable in Content Translation experimental support for a basic machine translation system for Assamese that could improve over time with the help of the community.

Background

For some languages, Content translation offers Machine Translation as a starting point for users to edit and improve. In addition, the tool provides mechanisms to encourage the creation of good quality content, preventing the publication of lightly edited machine translations. As a result, the translations produced with the tool are less likely to be deleted than the articles started from scratch.

Unfortunately, Assamese is not supported by the translation services integrated in the tool such as Apertium, Google or Yandex. This requires editors to write their translations from scratch.

Proposal

We want to propose the integration of OpusMT, an Open source Neural Machine Translation system that supports the English-Assamese language pair (you can try the translation engine in this example website). Although the translation service is based on MarianMT, a powerful neural network system, the quality of the final translations heavily depends on the availability of translation data which is limited for Assamese at the moment. This means that:

• The translation quality will be very low initially. When using the translation service you should expect to still rewrite most of the content. This may not be an extra effort compared to the current situation, given that users have to write their translations from scratch since there is no alternative Machine Translation system available.
• Quality will improve over time as more articles are translated. Each translation created with Content Translation (using machine translation or from scratch) will contribute to the global corpus of translation examples used by the system. Thus, the more translations that are created with the tool, the better the machine translation service will become.

We believe that this approach will help the less-supported languages over time. We want to check if this plan sounds good with the Assamese community, and encourage Assamese editors to translate Wikipedia articles with the tool. In this way, your translations not only help expand the knowledge available in your language, but also become a way to improve the open source machine translation service that can be used inside and outside Wikipedia.

Note that the usage of OpusMT machine translation is optional and editors are free to translate without using such services. In order to facilitate access to the tool we also plan to enable Content translation by default on Assamese Wikipedia. That will make it easy for users to discover the tool through several entry points. However, users not interested in translation will still be able to disable it from their preferences.

Impact

On Assamese Wikipedia, 198 articles have been created with Content Translation since 2015 (compared to the 6.7 thousand articles created from scratch in the same period). So we don’t expect a high volume of new content as an immediate result of this experiment. In any case, we want to encourage editors to report any issues they find with the tool while creating or reviewing translations.

In order to make sure that the content created using the new machine translation system results in a productive contribution, we’ll keep track of the translations created with the tool and their deletion ratios. In addition, we’ll set stricter limits on machine translation to enforce more intensive editing of the initial low quality machine translation.

We want to make sure the expectations are clear before enabling the new system. Please share your questions and your thoughts on the idea. We’ll proceed only if there are no major concerns from the community.

Hello everyone. We have enabled OpusMT for Assamese in Content translation. As we mentioned in last month announcement, this is an experimental translation service that will provide low quality translations initially but will improve over time as users translate new articles and make corrections.

We have adjusted the translation limits to make sure that articles are not published with more than 70% of unmodified machine translation. We’ll be monitoring the statistics for Assamese as well as the list of articles created with the tool. Please, share your experience creating and reviewing articles created with the tool, and let us know how we can support you better.

@Pginer-WMF: Thank you for you effort. I tried using the Content Translation, but unfortunately the translated text is not even close to the original text. It just gives random text (surprising I mostly saw texts from the Bible). I understand that we need to use this application more and more to train the machine translation engine and eventually get satisfactory result. However looking at the current status of the application and talking to our community members, many are discouraged to use it as it doesn't even translate one word correctly. I wonder what corpus was used to train the engines? Was there any native Assamese speaker involved in the process? @SlowPhoton: Thanks for the feedback. We are using models from the Opus (Open Parallel Corpus) project from the University of Helsinki. They compile and process fee licensed content available on the web. One of those sources is the translations created with Content Translation itself (about 200 articles for Assamese), but the Opus project includes many other sources (I checked and the bible seems another one). I don't know how many of those resources include Assamese content, how much information they include and how reliable it is, but since it is base don open sources there may be ways to help improve it. The different ways that I can think for the Assamese community to help improve the corpus are: (a) review the current corpus to find mistakes in the translations and share with the project Opus maintainer Jorg Tiedemann (jorg.tiedemann@helsinki.fi), (b) share with Jorg any additional open corpus for Assamese that may be available on the internet for him to include, (c) contribute to any of the projects already integrated in Opus such as Content Translation (or Ubuntu/Gnome localizations, etc.) to help expand the translations available for Assamese. Native Assamese knowledge is needed for many of the activities that could help improve support, but if there is anything we could do to support the community in this, please let us know. This early version of the Reply tool automatically signs and indents comments.

The Editing team has been working on the talk pages project. The goal of the talk pages project is to help contributors communicate on wiki more easily. This project is the result of the Talk pages consultation 2019.

In a future update, the team plans to test a tool for easily linking to another user's name, a rich-text editing option, and other tools.

The team is building a new tool for replying to comments now. This early version can sign and indent comments automatically. Please test the new Reply tool.

• On 31 March 2020, the new উত্তৰ দিয়ক tool was offered as a Beta Feature editors at four Wikipedias: Arabic, Dutch, French, and Hungarian. If your community also wants early access to the new tool, contact User:Whatamidoing (WMF).
• The team is planning some upcoming changes. Please review the proposed design and share your thoughts on the talk page. The team will test features such as:
  • an easy way to mention another editor ("pinging"),
  • a rich-text visual editing option, and
  • other features identified through user testing or recommended by editors.

Dear Wikimedians, as we have seen in many articles in Assamese Wikipedia, some trivial mistakes and typos are present all over. Considering that I developed a semi-automated bot called TextCleanerBot to correct some usual mistakes such as replacing Bengali ৰ with Assamese ৰ, punctuation related mistakes, and some other Assamese grammatical errors. I am thankful to Mridul Kumar Sharmah for letting me use his database for Lachit pad, an online sanitizer for Assamese texts. Earlier there used to be a bot called Ucodebot, which used to replace Bengali ৰ with Assamese ৰ, but unfortunately, that is not active anymore. The idea behind having a locally run bot is that we as a community can keep updating the database as needed. I have already done some test runs and results are mostly positive with some fluke here and there. I will constantly be improving them as we go. Please provide your feedback whether you support or oppose such bot in Assamese Wikipedia. This issue of the Editing newsletter includes information the Talk pages project, an effort to help contributors communicate on wiki more easily.

• Reply tool: This is available as a Beta Feature at the four partner wikis (Arabic, Dutch, French, and Hungarian Wikipedias). The Beta Feature is called "আলোচনা সঁজুলি". The Beta Feature will get new features soon. The new features include writing comments in a new visual editing mode and pinging other users by typing @. You can test the new features on the Beta Cluster now. Some other wikis will have a chance to try the Beta Feature in the coming months.
• New requirements for user signatures: Soon, users will not be able to save invalid custom signatures in Special:Preferences. This will reduce signature spoofing, prevent page corruption, and make new talk page tools more reliable. Most editors will not be affected.
• New discussion tool: The Editing team is beginning work on a simpler process for starting new discussions. You can see the initial design on the project page.
• Research on the use of talk pages: The Editing team worked with the Wikimedia research team to study how talk pages help editors improve articles. We learned that new editors who use talk pages make more edits to the main namespace than new editors who don't use talk pages.

More than 50 million edits have been made using the visual editor on desktop.

Seven years ago this month, the Editing team offered the visual editor to most Wikipedia editors. Since then, editors have achieved many milestones:

• More than 50 million edits have been made using the visual editor on desktop.
• More than 2 million new articles have been created in the visual editor. More than 600,000 of these new articles were created during 2019.
• The visual editor is increasingly popular. The proportion of all edits made using the visual editor has increased every year since its introduction.
• In 2019, 35% of the edits by newcomers (logged-in editors with ≤99 edits) used the visual editor. This percentage has increased every year.
• Almost 5 million edits on the mobile site have been made with the visual editor. Most of these edits have been made since the Editing team started improving the mobile visual editor in 2018.
• On 17 November 2019, the first edit from outer space was made in the mobile visual editor. 🚀 👩‍🚀
• Editors have made more than 7 million edits in the 2017 wikitext editor, including starting 600,000 new articles in it. The 2017 wikitext editor is VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode. You can enable it in your preferences.

‎Improving the translation support for the Assamese Wikipedia

Hi!

Content translation has been successful in supporting the translation process on many Wikipedia communities, and we want to help additional wikis with potential to grow using translation as part of a new initiative.

Content translation facilitates the creation of Wikipedia articles by translating content from other languages. It has been used already to create more than half a million articles. In addition, the tool provides mechanisms to encourage the creation of good quality content, preventing the publication of lightly edited machine translations. In general, our analysis shows that the translations produced are less likely to be deleted than the articles started from scratch.

Assamese Wikipedia editors have used Content translation to create more than three hundred articles. Given the size of the editing community, we think that there is potential to use translation to create more articles, expand existing ones, and attract new editors that learn how to make productive edits. Translation can help the community to reduce the language gap with other languages and grow the number of editors in a sustainable way. In order to achieve this goal, we want to collaborate with you to make Content translation more visible in the Assamese Wikipedia and support new ways to translate.

As a first step, during the next weeks we plan to enable Content translation by default on the Assamese Wikipedia. That will make it easy for users to discover the tool through several entry points. However, users not interested in translation will still be able to disable it from their preferences.

The Editing team is working on mw:Talk pages project/replying. The Reply tool is one result of the big mw:Talk pages consultation 2019. Editing is planning to offer the Reply tool to your community as a Beta Feature soon, probably on Wednesday, 14 October. The Reply tool has been used to make more than 25,000 comments at about 20 wikis so far.

The Editing team is particularly interested in learning how well this works for you, especially if you have trouble typing comments.

Here's what you need to know:

• Using the Reply tool is optional. The Beta Feature will be turned off. If you want to try it, you will need to go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures and turn it on next Wednesday (or maybe Thursday).
• There are a few things that you might want to check.
  • Check mw:Help:DiscussionTools/Why can't I reply to this comment? for information about "unsigned" templates and other information.
  • Some languages use a particular style for signatures. For example, Japanese does not add a space between the comment and the signature. I don't think that's the case here, but if I've guessed wrong, then you can define the signature format for all users at MediaWiki:Discussiontools-signature-prefix.
  • Missing or wrong translations can be fixed at Translatewiki.net.
• If you have questions or encounter problems, please leave a note at mw:Talk:Talk pages project/replying. That's the fastest way to reach the devs.

Wikimedia Foundation Community Board seats: Call for feedback meeting

The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees is organizing a call for feedback about community selection processes[1] between February 1 and March 14. While the Wikimedia Foundation and the movement have grown about five times in the past ten years, the Board’s structure and processes have remained basically the same. As the Board is designed today, we have a problem of capacity, performance, and lack of representation of the movement’s diversity. Direct elections tend to favor candidates from the leading language communities, regardless of how relevant their skills and experience might be in serving as a Board member, or contributing to the ability of the Board to perform its specific responsibilities. It is also a fact that the current processes have favored volunteers from North America and Western Europe. As a matter of fact, there had only been one member who served on the Board, from South Asia, in more than fifteen years of history.

In the upcoming months, we need to renew three community seats and appoint three more community members in the new seats. This call for feedback is to see what processes can we all collaboratively design to promote and choose candidates that represent our movement and are prepared with the experience, skills, and insight to perform as trustees? In this regard, it would be good to have a community discussion to discuss the proposed ideas and share our thoughts, give feedback and contribute to the process. Wikimania 2021 will be hosted virtually for the first time in the event's 15-year history. Since there is no in-person host, the event is being organized by a diverse group of Wikimedia volunteers that form the Core Organizing Team (COT) for Wikimania 2021.

Event Program - Individuals or a group of individuals can submit their session proposals to be a part of the program. There will be translation support for sessions provided in a number of languages. See more information here.

When newcomers had the Reply tool and tried to post on a talk page, they were more successful at posting a comment. (Source)

Earlier this year, the Editing team ran a large study of the Reply Tool. The main goal was to find out whether the Reply Tool helped newer editors communicate on wiki. The second goal was to see whether the comments that newer editors made using the tool needed to be reverted more frequently than comments newer editors made with the existing wikitext page editor.

The key results were:

• Newer editors who had automatic ("default on") access to the Reply tool were more likely to post a comment on a talk page.
• The comments that newer editors made with the Reply Tool were also less likely to be reverted than the comments that newer editors made with page editing.

These results give the Editing team confidence that the tool is helpful.

Looking ahead

The team is planning to make the Reply tool available to everyone as an opt-out preference in the coming months. This has already happened at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.

The next step is to resolve a technical challenge. Then, they will deploy the Reply tool first to the Wikipedias that participated in the study. After that, they will deploy it, in stages, to the other Wikipedias and all WMF-hosted wikis.

You can turn on "আলোচনা সঁজুলি" in Beta Features now. After you get the Reply tool, you can change your preferences at any time in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion.

Below is background information about Section translation, why we have chosen your community, and how to test it.

Background information

Content Translation has been a successful tool for editors to create content in their language. More than one million articles have been created across all languages since the tool was released in 2015. The Wikimedia Foundation Language team has improved the translation experience further with the Section Translation. The WMF Language team enabled the early version of the tool in February in Bengali Wikipedia. Through their feedback, the tool was improved and ready for your community to test and help us with feedback to make it better.

Section Translation extends the capabilities of Content Translation to support mobile devices. On mobile, the tool will:

• Guide you to translate one section at a time in order to expand existing articles or create new ones.
• Make it easy to transfer knowledge across languages anytime from your mobile device.

Assamese Wikipedia seems an ideal candidate to enjoy this new tool since data shows significant mobile editing activity.

We plan to enable the tool on Assamese Wikipedia in the coming weeks if there are no objections from your community. After it is enabled, we’ll monitor the content created with the tool and process all the feedback. In any case, feel free to raise any concerns or questions you may already have in any of the following formats:

Section Translation tool enabled in Assamese Wikipedia

Hello Friends!

The Language team is pleased to let you know that the Section Translation tool is now enabled in Assamese Wikipedia. It means you can translate real content one section at a time using your mobile devices with ease.

Now you can also start translating an article on your mobile device right when you notice it is missing in Assamese. From a Wikipedia article in any language, switch languages and search for Assamese. If the article does not exist, an option to translate it will appear, as shown in the image below.

We have enabled this tool in your Wikipedia based on your interest and feedback about the tool. This tool will be useful for your community since data shows significant mobile device activity in Assamese Wikipedia.

Deployment of FLORES Machine Translation to Assamese Wikipedia

Hello Friends!

The WMF Language team has added another machine translation (MT) support for the Content Translation in Assamese Wikipedia called FLORES. This means that you can choose to use FLORES machine translation when translating Wikipedia articles to Assamese using the Content Translation.

The FLORES Machine Translation service is provided by an AI research team at Meta through a free for use API key that allows the Content Translation to access the service on the FLORES server for an evaluation trial period. This MT is set as optional; in your Wikipedia, which means you can choose not to use it as your preferred initial translator. If you decide to use this service, you can select "FLORES" from the "Initial Translation" dropdown menu where you will find other existing machine translation services on the sidebar.

The Wikimedia Foundation has worked out an agreement that allows the use of FLORES without compromising Wikipedia’s policies about attribution of rights, your privacy as a user, and brand representation. You can find more information about the FLORES Machine translation on this page.

Please note that the use of the FLORES MT is optional. However, we would want your community to:

• use it to improve the quality of the Machine Translation service; and
• provide feedback about its quality and ask any questions you might have about this addition.

We trust that this addition is a good support to the Content Translations tool towards having better quality articles in Assamese Wikipedia.

1. The Editing team will finish adding new features to the Talk pages project and deploy it.
2. They are beginning a new project, Edit check.

The Editing team is nearly finished with this first phase of the Talk pages project. Nearly all new features are available now in the Beta Feature for আলোচনা সঁজুলি.

It will show information about how active a discussion is, such as the date of the most recent comment. There will soon be a new "বিষয় যোগ কৰক" button. You will be able to turn them off at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion. Please tell them what you think.

Daily edit completion rate by test group: DiscussionTools (test group) and MobileFrontend overlay (control group)

An A/B test for আলোচনা সঁজুলি on the mobile site has finished. Editors were more successful with আলোচনা সঁজুলি. The Editing team is enabling these features for all editors on the mobile site.

New Project: Edit Check

The Editing team is beginning a project to help new editors of Wikipedia. It will help people identify some problems before they click "সালসলনি প্ৰকাশ কৰক". The first tool will encourage people to add references when they add new content. Please watch that page for more information. You can join a conference call on 3 March 2023 to learn more.

Your Wikipedia, like all others, benefits from the Growth features. These features are aimed to help newcomers to make first edits in a simpler way, so that they are encouraged to return and edit more.

We offer several task types for newcomers, that you can find at Special:Homepage (this might require an activation in your preferences). However, we discovered that one of the tasks, Add a link, wasn't performing well enough for your language. As a consequence, we disabled it temporary. 40 edits have been made using this feature so far.
