Proposal to enable an experimental open source machine translation system for Assameseসম্পাদনা কৰক
Content translation has been used already by many communities to translate more than half a million Wikipedia articles, and we want to help communities with potential to grow by using translation more. We propose to enable in Content Translation experimental support for a basic machine translation system for Assamese that could improve over time with the help of the community.
We want to propose the integration of OpusMT, an Open source Neural Machine Translation system that supports the English-Assamese language pair (you can try the translation engine in this example website). Although the translation service is based on MarianMT, a powerful neural network system, the quality of the final translations heavily depends on the availability of translation data which is limited for Assamese at the moment. This means that:
The translation quality will be very low initially. When using the translation service you should expect to still rewrite most of the content. This may not be an extra effort compared to the current situation, given that users have to write their translations from scratch since there is no alternative Machine Translation system available.
Quality will improve over time as more articles are translated. Each translation created with Content Translation (using machine translation or from scratch) will contribute to the global corpus of translation examples used by the system. Thus, the more translations that are created with the tool, the better the machine translation service will become.
We believe that this approach will help the less-supported languages over time. We want to check if this plan sounds good with the Assamese community, and encourage Assamese editors to translate Wikipedia articles with the tool. In this way, your translations not only help expand the knowledge available in your language, but also become a way to improve the open source machine translation service that can be used inside and outside Wikipedia.
Note that the usage of OpusMT machine translation is optional and editors are free to translate without using such services. In order to facilitate access to the tool we also plan to enable Content translation by default on Assamese Wikipedia. That will make it easy for users to discover the tool through several entry points. However, users not interested in translation will still be able to disable it from their preferences.
On Assamese Wikipedia, 198 articles have been created with Content Translation since 2015 (compared to the 6.7 thousand articles created from scratch in the same period). So we don’t expect a high volume of new content as an immediate result of this experiment. In any case, we want to encourage editors to report any issues they find with the tool while creating or reviewing translations.
In order to make sure that the content created using the new machine translation system results in a productive contribution, we’ll keep track of the translations created with the tool and their deletion ratios. In addition, we’ll set stricter limits on machine translation to enforce more intensive editing of the initial low quality machine translation.
We want to make sure the expectations are clear before enabling the new system. Please share your questions and your thoughts on the idea. We’ll proceed only if there are no major concerns from the community.
Hello everyone. We have enabled OpusMT for Assamese in Content translation. As we mentioned in last month announcement, this is an experimental translation service that will provide low quality translations initially but will improve over time as users translate new articles and make corrections.
@Pginer-WMF: Thank you for you effort. I tried using the Content Translation, but unfortunately the translated text is not even close to the original text. It just gives random text (surprising I mostly saw texts from the Bible). I understand that we need to use this application more and more to train the machine translation engine and eventually get satisfactory result. However looking at the current status of the application and talking to our community members, many are discouraged to use it as it doesn't even translate one word correctly. I wonder what corpus was used to train the engines? Was there any native Assamese speaker involved in the process? Could you give us some details on this? --SlowPhoton (talk) 06:49, 20 February 2020 (ইউ.টি.চি.)
@SlowPhoton: Thanks for the feedback. We are using models from the Opus (Open Parallel Corpus) project from the University of Helsinki. They compile and process fee licensed content available on the web. One of those sources is the translations created with Content Translation itself (about 200 articles for Assamese), but the Opus project includes many other sources (I checked and the bible seems another one). I don't know how many of those resources include Assamese content, how much information they include and how reliable it is, but since it is base don open sources there may be ways to help improve it. The different ways that I can think for the Assamese community to help improve the corpus are: (a) review the current corpus to find mistakes in the translations and share with the project Opus maintainer Jorg Tiedemann (firstname.lastname@example.org), (b) share with Jorg any additional open corpus for Assamese that may be available on the internet for him to include, (c) contribute to any of the projects already integrated in Opus such as Content Translation (or Ubuntu/Gnome localizations, etc.) to help expand the translations available for Assamese. Native Assamese knowledge is needed for many of the activities that could help improve support, but if there is anything we could do to support the community in this, please let us know. Thanks! --Pginer-WMF (talk) 09:55, 21 February 2020 (ইউ.টি.চি.)
Dear Wikimedians, as we have seen in many articles in Assamese Wikipedia, some trivial mistakes and typos are present all over. Considering that I developed a semi-automated bot called TextCleanerBot to correct some usual mistakes such as replacing Bengali ৰ with Assamese ৰ, punctuation related mistakes, and some other Assamese grammatical errors. I am thankful to Mridul Kumar Sharmah for letting me use his database for Lachit pad, an online sanitizer for Assamese texts. Earlier there used to be a bot called Ucodebot, which used to replace Bengali ৰ with Assamese ৰ, but unfortunately, that is not active anymore. The idea behind having a locally run bot is that we as a community can keep updating the database as needed. I have already done some test runs and results are mostly positive with some fluke here and there. I will constantly be improving them as we go. Please provide your feedback whether you support or oppose such bot in Assamese Wikipedia. If you see any errors made by the bot, report them as well. --SlowPhoton (talk) 07:41, 14 May 2020 (ইউ.টি.চি.)

Reply tool: This is available as a Beta Feature at the four partner wikis (Arabic, Dutch, French, and Hungarian Wikipedias). The Beta Feature is called "আলোচনা সঁজুলি". The Beta Feature will get new features soon. The new features include writing comments in a new visual editing mode and pinging other users by typing @. You can test the new features on the Beta Cluster now. Some other wikis will have a chance to try the Beta Feature in the coming months.
Improving the translation support for the Assamese Wikipediaসম্পাদনা কৰক
Content translation has been successful in supporting the translation process on many Wikipedia communities, and we want to help additional wikis with potential to grow using translation as part of a new initiative.
Assamese Wikipedia editors have used Content translation to create more than three hundred articles. Given the size of the editing community, we think that there is potential to use translation to create more articles, expand existing ones, and attract new editors that learn how to make productive edits. Translation can help the community to reduce the language gap with other languages and grow the number of editors in a sustainable way. In order to achieve this goal, we want to collaborate with you to make Content translation more visible in the Assamese Wikipedia and support new ways to translate.
As a first step, during the next weeks we plan to enable Content translation by default on the Assamese Wikipedia. That will make it easy for users to discover the tool through several entry points. However, users not interested in translation will still be able to disable it from their preferences.
Please feel free to share any comment in this conversation thread.
Wikimedia Foundation Community Board seats: Call for feedback meetingসম্পাদনা কৰক
The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees is organizing a call for feedback about community selection processes between February 1 and March 14. While the Wikimedia Foundation and the movement have grown about five times in the past ten years, the Board’s structure and processes have remained basically the same. As the Board is designed today, we have a problem of capacity, performance, and lack of representation of the movement’s diversity. Direct elections tend to favor candidates from the leading language communities, regardless of how relevant their skills and experience might be in serving as a Board member, or contributing to the ability of the Board to perform its specific responsibilities. It is also a fact that the current processes have favored volunteers from North America and Western Europe. As a matter of fact, there had only been one member who served on the Board, from South Asia, in more than fifteen years of history.
In the upcoming months, we need to renew three community seats and appoint three more community members in the new seats. This call for feedback is to see what processes can we all collaboratively design to promote and choose candidates that represent our movement and are prepared with the experience, skills, and insight to perform as trustees? In this regard, it would be good to have a community discussion to discuss the proposed ideas and share our thoughts, give feedback and contribute to the process. To discuss this, you are invited to a community meeting that is being organized on March 12 from 8 pm to 10 pm, and the meeting link to join is https://meet.google.com/umc-attq-kdt. You can add this meeting to your Google Calendar by clicking here. Please ping me if you have any questions. Thank you, --KCVelaga (WMF) (বাৰ্তা) 10:58, 8 March 2021 (ইউ.টি.চি.)
Wikimania 2021 will be hosted virtually for the first time in the event's 15-year history. Since there is no in-person host, the event is being organized by a diverse group of Wikimedia volunteers that form the Core Organizing Team (COT) for Wikimania 2021.
Event Program - Individuals or a group of individuals can submit their session proposals to be a part of the program. There will be translation support for sessions provided in a number of languages. See more information here.
Please note that the deadline for submission is 18th June 2021.
Announcements- To keep up to date with the developments around Wikimania, the COT sends out weekly updates. You can view them in the Announcement section here.
Office Hour - If you are left with questions, the COT will be hosting some office hours (in multiple languages), in multiple time-zones, to answer any programming questions that you might have. Details can be found here.
When newcomers had the Reply tool and tried to post on a talk page, they were more successful at posting a comment. (Source)
Earlier this year, the Editing team ran a large study of the Reply Tool. The main goal was to find out whether the Reply Tool helped newer editors communicate on wiki. The second goal was to see whether the comments that newer editors made using the tool needed to be reverted more frequently than comments newer editors made with the existing wikitext page editor.
The key results were:
Newer editors who had automatic ("default on") access to the Reply tool were more likely to post a comment on a talk page.
The comments that newer editors made with the Reply Tool were also less likely to be reverted than the comments that newer editors made with page editing.
These results give the Editing team confidence that the tool is helpful.
The team is planning to make the Reply tool available to everyone as an opt-out preference in the coming months. This has already happened at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.
Enabling Section Translation: a new mobile translation experienceসম্পাদনা কৰক
নমস্কাৰ Assamese Wikipedians!
Apologies as this message is not in Assamese language, অনুগ্ৰহ কৰি আপোনাৰ ভাষালৈ অনুবাদ কৰাত সহায় কৰক.
The WMF Language team is pleased to let you know that we will like to enable the Section translation tool in Assamese Wikipedia. For this, our team will love you to read about the tool and test it so you can:
Give us your feedback
Ask us questions
Tell us how to improve it.
Below is background information about Section translation, why we have chosen your community, and how to test it.
Content Translation has been a successful tool for editors to create content in their language. More than one million articles have been created across all languages since the tool was released in 2015. The Wikimedia Foundation Language team has improved the translation experience further with the Section Translation. The WMF Language team enabled the early version of the tool in February in Bengali Wikipedia. Through their feedback, the tool was improved and ready for your community to test and help us with feedback to make it better.
Section Translation extends the capabilities of Content Translation to support mobile devices. On mobile, the tool will:
Guide you to translate one section at a time in order to expand existing articles or create new ones.
Make it easy to transfer knowledge across languages anytime from your mobile device.
Assamese Wikipedia seems an ideal candidate to enjoy this new tool since data shows significant mobile editing activity.
We plan to enable the tool on Assamese Wikipedia in the coming weeks if there are no objections from your community.
After it is enabled, we’ll monitor the content created with the tool and process all the feedback. In any case, feel free to raise any concerns or questions you may already have in any of the following formats:

Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Assamese Wikipediaসম্পাদনা কৰক
Dear Assamese Wikipedia Community,
I apologize for writing in English as my Assamese is too limited when comes to writing. But I want to thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global behavior guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC.
After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy. We are currently in the second phase of the consultation. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the enforcement and implementation of this policy. We want to hear from the community on how this policy can be enforced on the Assamese community and what might be needed to do so.
You can participate in the discussion here. We encourage you to express your opinion publicly. However, I understand that not everything can be discussed publicly so if you wish to share your opinion privately, you can do so by emailing me as well.
Please let us know how you feel about the current UCoC draft. Let us know if anything directly contradicts with any behavioral or other policies you have on Assamese Wikipedia. Share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences that relate to UCoC, even if you are a newcomer. Tell us, what is important to you to make your stay more pleasant and safe. If you are an experienced user, let us know what needs to be improved so we can build a more friendly and cooperative space to increase editor engagement and retention of new users.
Wikimedia projects are governed by all of you, regardless of where you come from, your involvement, or how new or experienced you are. So, it is you who needs to step up to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pleasant working environment.
We are glad to inform you that the second iteration of Wikimedia Wikimeet India is going to be organised in February. This is an upcoming online wiki event that is to be conducted from 18 to 20 February 2022 to celebrate International Mother Language Day. The planning of the event has already started and there are many opportunities for Wikimedians to volunteer in order to help make it a successful event. The major announcement is that submissions for sessions has opened from today until a month (until 23 January 2022). You can propose your session here. For more updates and how you can get involved in the same, please read the first newsletter
If you want regular updates regarding the event on your talk page, please add your username here. You will get the next newsletter after 15 days. Please get involved in the event discussions, open tasks and so on.

Upcoming Call for Feedback about the Board of Trustees electionsসম্পাদনা কৰক
You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki.
The Board of Trustees is preparing a call for feedback about the upcoming Board Elections, from January 7 - February 10, 2022.
While details will be finalized the week before the call, we have confirmed at least two questions that will be asked during this call for feedback:
What is the best way to ensure fair representation of emerging communities among the Board?
What involvement should candidates have during the election?
While additional questions may be added, the Movement Strategy and Governance team wants to provide time for community members and affiliates to consider and prepare ideas on the confirmed questions before the call opens. We apologize for not having a complete list of questions at this time. The list of questions should only grow by one or two questions. The intention is to not overwhelm the community with requests, but provide notice and welcome feedback on these important questions.
Do you want to help organize local conversation during this Call?
Reach out if you have any questions or concerns. The Movement Strategy and Governance team will be minimally staffed until January 3. Please excuse any delayed response during this time. We also recognize some community members and affiliates are offline during the December holidays. We apologize if our message has reached you while you are on holiday.

The Call for Feedback: Board of Trustees elections is now open and will close on 16 February 2022.
With this Call for Feedback, the Movement Strategy and Governance team is taking a different approach. This approach incorporates community feedback from 2021. Instead of leading with proposals, the Call is framed around key questions from the Board of Trustees. The key questions came from the feedback about the 2021 Board of Trustees election. The intention is to inspire collective conversation and collaborative proposal development about these key questions.
There are two confirmed questions that will be asked during this Call for Feedback:
What is the best way to ensure more diverse representation among elected candidates? The Board of Trustees noted the importance of selecting candidates who represent the full diversity of the Wikimedia movement. The current processes have favored volunteers from North America and Europe.
What are the expectations for the candidates during the election? Board candidates have traditionally completed applications and answered community questions. How can an election provide appropriate insight into candidates while also appreciating candidates’ status as volunteers?
There is one additional question that may be presented during the Call about selection processes. This question is still under discussion, but the Board wanted to give insight into the confirmed questions as soon as possible. Hopefully if an additional question is going to be asked, it will be ready during the first week of the Call for Feedback.
Affiliates are an important part of the Wikimedia movement. Two seats of the Board of Trustees due to be filled this year were filled in 2019 through the Affiliate-selected Board seats process. A change in the Bylaws removed the distinction between community and affiliate seats. This leaves the important question: How should affiliates be involved in the selection of new seats?
The question is broad in the sense that the answers may refer not just to the two seats mentioned, but also to other, Community- and Affiliate-selected seats. The Board is hoping to find an approach that will both engage the affiliates and give them actual agency, and also optimize the outcomes in terms of selecting people with top skills, experience, diversity, and wide community’s support.
The Board of Trustees is seeking feedback about this question especially, although not solely, from the affiliate community. Everyone is invited to share proposals and join the conversation in the Call for Feedback channels. In addition to collecting online feedback, the Movement Strategy and Governance team will organize several video calls with affiliate members to collect feedback. These calls will be at different times and include Trustees.
Due to the late addition of this third question, the Call will be extended until 16 February.

The Wikimedia Education newsletter is a monthly newsletter that collects articles written by community members using Wikimedia projects in education around the world, and it is published by the EWOC Newsletter team in collaboration with the Education team. These stories can bring you new ideas to try, valuable insights about the success and challenges of our community members in running education programs in their context.
If your affiliate/language project is developing its own education initiatives, please remember to take advantage of this newsletter to publish your stories with the wider movement that shares your passion for education. We want to give you an update related to Wikimedia Wikimeet India 2022. Wikimedia Wikimeet India 2022 (or WMWM2022) was to be conducted from 18 to 20 February 2022 and is postponed now.
Currently, we are seeing a new wave of the pandemic that is affecting many people around. Although WMWM is an online event, it has multiple preparation components such as submission, registration, RFC etc which require community involvement.
We feel this may not be the best time for extensive community engagement. We have also received similar requests from Wikimedians around us. Following this observation, please note that we are postponing the event, and the new dates will be informed on the mailing list and on the event page.
Although the main WMWM is postponed, we may conduct a couple of brief calls/meets (similar to the Stay safe, stay connected call) on the mentioned date, if things go well.
We'll also get back to you about updates related to WMWM once the situation is better. Thank you MediaWiki message delivery (বাৰ্তা) 07:27, 27 January 2022 (ইউ.টি.চি.)

The event will take place in Hyderabad. The regional event will be in-person with support for virtual participation. As it is with any hackathon, the event’s program will be semi-structured i.e. while we will have some sessions in sync with the main hackathon event, the rest of the time will be upto participants’ interest on what issues they are interested to work on. The event page can be seen on this page.
In this regard, we would like to invite community members who would like to attend in-person to fill out a form for scholarship application by 17 April, which is available on the event page. Please note that the hackathon won’t be focusing on training of new skills, and it is expected that applications have some experience/knowledge contributing to technical areas of the Wikimedia movement. Please post on the event talk page if you have any queries. MediaWiki message delivery (বাৰ্তা) 18:31, 7 April 2022 (ইউ.টি.চি.)

The 2030 Wikimedia Movement Strategy sets a direction toward "knowledge as a service" and "knowledge equity". The Wikimedia Foundation wants to plan according to these two goals. How do you think the Wikimedia Foundation should apply them to our work?
The Wikimedia Foundation continues to explore better ways of working at a regional level. We have increased our regional focus in areas like grants, new features, and community conversations. How can we improve?
Anyone can contribute to the Movement Strategy process. We want to know about your activities, ideas, requests, and lessons learned. How can the Wikimedia Foundation better support the volunteers and affiliates working in Movement Strategy activities?
The Board of Trustees oversees the operations of the Wikimedia Foundation. Community-and-affiliate selected trustees and Board-appointed trustees make up the Board of Trustees. Each trustee serves a three year term. The Wikimedia community has the opportunity to vote for community-and-affiliate selected trustees.
The Wikimedia community will vote to elect two seats on the Board of Trustees in 2022. This is an opportunity to improve the representation, diversity, and expertise of the Board of Trustees.
I hope you are doing well. As you know CIS-A2K updated the communities every month about their previous work through the Newsletter. This message is about April 2022 Newsletter. In this newsletter, we have mentioned our conducted events, ongoing events and upcoming events.
The Movement Strategy and Governance team is looking for community members to serve as election volunteers in the upcoming Board of Trustees election.
The idea of the Election Volunteer Program came up during the 2021 Wikimedia Board of Trustees Election. This program turned out to be successful. With the help of Election Volunteers we were able to increase outreach and participation in the election by 1,753 voters over 2017. Overall turnout was 10.13%, 1.1 percentage points more, and 214 wikis were represented in the election.
There were a total of 74 wikis that did not participate in 2017 that produced voters in the 2021 election. Can you help increase the participation even more?
Election volunteers will help in the following areas:
Translate short messages and announce the ongoing election process in community channels
Optional: Monitor community channels for community comments and questions
Maintain the friendly space policy during conversations and events
Present the guidelines and voting information to the community in a neutral manner
Do you want to be an election volunteer and ensure your community is represented in the vote? Sign up here to receive updates. You can use the talk page for questions about translation.
